What are CBD and Hemp?

Hemp is a plant within the Cannabis genus. It is nutrient-dense and used around the world for a multitude of things.

It’s natural. The flowers of the hemp plant contain over 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids, including CBD (cannabidiol).

Unlike THC, hemp (and CBD) is not psychoactive, so you’ll never get high. Marijuana is also a member of the Cannabis genus, but hemp plants have a THC concentration of not more than 0.3%, while marijuana plants typically contain ~10-20% THC.

How does CBD work?

CBD’s health benefits are related to their ability to manipulate the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). When something throws us out of homeostasis, or a state of balance, the ECS helps course-correct so that we can operate at the best possible level.

How Do I Choose A CBD?

There’s a lot of information out there. Here’s what you need to look for.

Confirm the origin of the CBD or Hemp

Where did it come from? Was it grown in the US? Was it grown under organic practices? Is it non-GMO?

This is important because hemp is a remedial crop, which means that it absorbs toxins from the soil and they end up in the plant. Hemp that’s going to be consumed should be grown with its remedial nature in mind.

Check the batch test (COA)

If a batch test/COA shows that a product contains more than .3% THC, do not buy that product online -- it does not meet the requirements of the 2018 Farm Bill.

Next, look at your batch test to ensure the cannabinoid potency of the product matches with what the company is advertising (e.g. if the product says it contains 250mg of CBD, double check that it actually does!)

Finally, if provided, check batch tests to ensure the product does not contain heavy metals, toxins or visible microbials

Take a close look at the ingredients

If you’re trying to buy a product with cannabinoids, make sure there are actually cannabinoids in that product! If the only mention of hemp is, for example, ‘hempseed oil,’ then there are no cannabinoids in that product. Look for terms like “hemp extract,” “full spectrum hemp extract,” “cannabidiol hemp extract (aerial parts)” or other terms that confirm a product is not just made with seeds or stalks.

Make sure that the product does not contain more than a 0.3% concentration of THC (one more time!)

Avoid products that claim to have CBD but don’t have an outline of the cannabinoid content

There are many products in the market that advertise as “CBD cream” or “CBD gummies” but they do not tell you how much CBD or provide any batch tests or detailed info on where their hemp comes from. Avoid these products - as outlined above, you want to ensure that the hemp extract used in the product you buy is of the highest quality.

Determine which form factor is best suited for your relief goals

Cream is a topical and is therefore going to function in more of a local way - aka, the cannabinoids will stay in a smaller area of the body. You can use creams to provide some added support for achy muscles, stiff joints, etc.

Oils/tinctures are consumed and therefore have more of a systemic (or whole body) impact. You can use oils to support whole body needs, like encouraging healthy sleep and helping with stress management.

Confirm your state regulation

We want you to feel comfortable with your purchase - each state has different regulations around the legality of CBD-based products, how they should be labeled, etc.
